Building Update, December 2002

October's storms caused substantial damage to
the church buildings – and revealed even more...

Storm Damage
Many of you will have noticed that the building suffered during the stormy weather in late October. The large stone cross that was on top of the church came down into the school playground along with a number of tiles. Mercifully it happened when no one was around and we were able to cordon off the playground before the children came back into school on Monday. The notice board was also a casualty of the high winds and we will be taking this opportunity to replace it with a better and more durable one.

Before and After: roof rot and repairs
• Zoom In: Before and After | More from Before

Unfortunately the damage to the roof meant that water got into the photocopier in the vestry, which took it out of commission for a while. An engineer has since checked it and thankfully it is back in full working order - maybe it just needed a good wash?? However, the roof above the vestry is still leaking and closer inspection by the roofer and the architect has revealed that the gulley between the two ridges, which should be lined with lead, is only lined with some very old and dilapidated roofing felt.

We face the prospect of more severe leaks within a year or two and therefore need to deal with this. Provisional estimates for the work needed start at around £7,500. At the time of writing (late November), the building fund stood at around £2,500 - your help is needed: please contact us if you have any fundraising suggestions or would like to make a donation!

Most of the immediate storm damage will be covered by our insurance company, EIG, but it will be a while before it is all fixed... and the insurance won't cover the repairs needed in the gulley.

Many thanks to John Congram who has carried out the work shown in the photographs and is overseeing the roof repairs. The new notice board will need permission from the Diocese (known as a 'faculty') as well as planning permission from Hillingdon borough.

Electrical Safety Certificate
We still don’t have an Electrical Safety Certificate for the building, although most of the work has now been carried out — special thanks to Tim Beale for all he’s done here. We hope to be able to get the remainder of the work completed before Christmas.

Health, Safety & Security
We are all responsible for health, safety and security in the building. If you spot anything dangerous or out of place please do tell Bruce or Mary as soon as possible so that it can be dealt with.
