Alan George Dann,

Baptist Church/ Yiewsley
27 July 2008 I would like to hear from old scholars of St Matthews church school.
I attended this school from 1948-1951 whilst Mr Scholar was headmaster.
Miss Naylor, Mr Burton and Mrs Creasy are some of the teachers I remember...
It's very possible that there are people who visit the Yiewsley website that might remember. Either that or try the Yiewsley Chat forums.

Dorothy Moore,

St Stephens, Normanhurst N.S.W.
15 January 2008 My name is Dorothy Moore and when I attended St. Matthew"s (from 1941) with my family I was Dorothy Freeborn. In 1943 Mr Ruffle took me to St Pauls Cathedral for my confirmation and later my nephews and niece (Horsman) were baptised in St. Matthew's.
My first teaching appointment was at St.Matthew's when Mr Scholar was the head.It is good to be reminded of these times (1952-1954). It was a busy time as we were preparing for the Coronation Celebrations. One of my tasks was to teach country dancing throughout the school and plan the Dance Day in the recreation ground.
After the war my sister and her family came to live in Yiewsley and she was a well known District nurse. She was Jean Horsman and also attended the church.
My nephew forwarded the webpage address to me and I enjoyed " wandering through the church with you."
Rita Whitten,

9 January 2008 What a surprise to find St Matthew's on the web whilst I was checking church names in the diocese.
My grandfather James Walter Hayward was verger at St Matthews for some years and I still have the parish magazine of June 1963 recording his passing. Rev Ruffle married my late parents in 1946 and baptized me in 1950.
I well remember Miss Dyer (mentioned on your history page) as she used to teach music and once a year all her students were taken on a day trip, to what in those days was chessington zoo.
What a trip down memory lane!
Jane Atkinson Dunford,

6 January 2008 I am a great grandaughter of Rev. Thomas Atkinson who was a vicar of your parish.
Your church site is beautiful and I thank those involved in saving the history of your parish.
God bless you.

Trudy Hetherington-Ford,

11 September 2007 I attended St Matthew's regularly when Mr Ruffle was there. He kindly helped with my application to attend St Martin's C of E School which is no longer there. I now reside in the New Forest in Hampshire, I was married in Florida Bay in 2002 hence my surname of Hetherington-Ford, previously I was Trudy Ford of Murial and Edward Ford in West Drayton.
Sue Dibley,

23 July 2007 I attended St Matthew's between 1950-54 when Mr Scholar was headmaster, Mr Walmsley my form teacher and Miss Creasey our music teacher. Now I am bringing my granddaughter to St Matthew's. I have many happy memories of my time at St Stephen's and St Matthew's.
Mary Spredbury,
St Mary's, Acton

23 July 2007 I can't believe it's over a year since I left St Matthew's - the time has gone very quickly. You have all been much in my prayers during the interregnum and I am really plesed to see that a new vicar has been appointed to lead you in the next phase of ministry in Yiewlsey. Wishing you all every blessing, Mary.
Cheryl Hinton (née Griffiths),

15 June 2007 I spent many happy years as part of the choir at St Matthew's and also attended the school. I left the choir when my family moved away to live in Didcot, Oxfordshire, where we still are now. Bumped into Christopher and Carolyn many years later in London which was great to catch up. Must be 15 years since I was last in the church or even back in Yiewsley.
Beth Langhorst 30 March 2007 Hello! I have discovered that my great grandfather, Charles Heron, was a schoolmaster at St Matthew's, and that he and his family lived at the "schoolhouse". I would dearly love to be able to purchase a photograph of the church... like the straight on photo that is on the left hand corner of your web site. Would that be possible? Very sincerely, Beth Langhorst

27 March 2007 I am a former student at your lovely school in 1988, together with my brother Moses Idonga. God bless you loads and keep you progressive and safe - am so happy that you have a website and do hope, by God's grace, I come and visit. I left for Evelyn's School after one year at your school and would really like to thank you for laying a foundation for my future - God bless you loads.
John Ruffle,

http://faithsjourney.blogspot.com
23 March 2007 Blessings to everyone at St Matthew's especially as I am certain all will be missing Rev Sue's care and support. In case my name sounds familar, it should be as I am a surviving nephew of Rev Fred Ruffle -- my dear "Uncle Fred". St Matthew's will always be special to me, meaning not just the building and the vicarage, but more so, the people, saints of God.

Every blessing to you, and thank you for your prayers!

John

16 January 2007 Noticed in your message of your move to Kensington, interested to know what you will be doing, have many fond memories of your acquaintance at Harefield. Kind regards and all God's blessings on all that you will be doing in the future (must keep in touch), Harold, regards also to Phil
Doug Barber,
13 January 2007 I found your website as I am a distant relative of Ferdinand Disraeli Sturgess (he was a cousin of my great grandmother). I am assuming it is the same person - surely the name is unique! It is interesting he became a vicar, many in his family were in the Royal Navy.
Robert Morris,

4 January 2007 I spent the first 18 years of my life as a member of the congregation, baptised on Easter day 1957, confirmed in 1970 by the future Bishop of London Graham Leonard and a member of the choir along with my older brother. I then moved back to Yiewsley after the death of my mother Averil in `1989 and my two eldest children went to St Matthew's School as I did! I'm now living near Ormskirk in Lancashire but commuting to Shrewsbury School weekly where I now teach after working in Manchester for a number of years. My brother Chris lives near Ely, works from home and sings in the cathedral.

23 December 2006 I am looking for inspirational cards/items that can be handed out to the people we minister to. Pocket prayers are ideal, if I can find them. I have enjoyed your site and will recommend it to others.
Rev (Mrs) Chris Argles,
St Paul's, Weston-Super-Mare
7 December 2006 Found your web-site whilst 'surfing' and thought I would just say hello, as I was baptised at St Matthew's (back in 1957!) and I am now an Anglican priest, working as a Hospice Chaplain in Bristol!
Yvette Lingwood,
St Mary's, Wexham
27 July 2006 I was baptised by Rev. Ruffle at Hillingdon Hospital a day after I was born in Feb 1970. I was brought to church 4 months later to be presented to church alongside my cousin, Nicola Cole, who was being baptised that day. My maiden name is Catling. I have been back many times for family baptisms, weddings and funerals.
Patricia Garrett 11 July 2006 I was baptised in St Matthew's with my older sister. Yiewsley library looks a lot different now!

27 June 2006 Lovely to catch up with what is going on at St Matthew's
Terence Hotston,
Australia
17 June 2006 I came across your website while researching parish borders and names of my family which lived there from 1800s, Nutbeem, Brown, Pizzey, Hotston: marriage, christening and death certificates from the various census records. I wish I could visit in person. The last time I was in UK was 1950.
Roger Dewey,
St John's, Hillingdon & St Andrew's, Uxbridge
13 June 2006 I visited the site soon after it started and again today. I'd say it's the most informative church website locally, well laid-out and with lots of useful links.
Jackson Ng 8 June 2006 I really like your website, it is clean, and no-frills, it gives exactly what people want from a website. The best thing I found on your website is the "Learning to Pray" section. I have had problem to pray when I first being a Christian, and I found that this section will be such a great help and encouragement for the newbies of Christian to pray without fear if anything go wrong or so. I will tell people about this webpage when get to know someone who have problem thinking of how to pray.

Thanks for the great work!

Here is a good Christian Music website you may be interested: www.praise-him.co.uk. They provide Good Christian Music reviews and books recommendations. I found the website rather helpful. Worth to have a look :)

Diane West 4 May 2006 Christened in 1963? and confirmed in 1969? by Mr Ruffle (?) - at St Matthew's and also St Stephen's - now living in Cambridge.
Jo Robinson 1 May 2006 I do love this website, it's been great to be able to show my friends pictures of somewhere that means so much to me, best bit: I can actually show them where I sit when I come home & sing with the choir & the ceiling that I know many of the former younger choristers used to spend the some part of the sermon looking at - well it is very pretty.

I love being able to keep up (to some level) with what's going on at St Matthew's, it's like having a little bit of Yiewsley up in Chester with me! What do they say, "You can take the girl out of Yiewsley..."?

See you all in a couple of months.
Ann Dell 20 March 2006 Very informative site and will arrange to visit later on as the Fox family are recorded at St Matthew's, St John's & St Martin's so we will have a tour of the area. My gg grandfather we believe was a verger at St Martin's in the early 1900's according to a letter we have.

20 January 2006 I am so delighted to see the church that my dear brother in Christ, David Dean, was baptized in when he was a young lad. What a beautiful Church you have. I sends blessings and joy to all who are there. Praise God!

15 January 2006 Baptised November 21st 1948 in St Matthew's. I now live in the USA with my wife Janet (Morrison) from West Drayton. We have two children, Tracy and Christopher, our family are still in the area. I am the Men's Ministry Leader for our church. I was born again in 2003 and found out how much our Lord loves each and everyone of us.

Wonderful to have my beginings founded in St Matthew's, baptised by Vicar Ruffle.

29 November 2005 What a wonderful surprise to find this website. I attended both St Stephen's & St Matthew's schools from 1965 through 1971 (ages 5 through 11). I also sang (or at least howled) in the St Matthew's Church choir (1969 to 1971). My crowning achievement was being picked to sing Jerusalem at a special service along with two other boys (Adam and Nigel Swift... I think). Anyway... I now live in San Francisco but coming across this site was a wonderful trip down memory lane). All the best... Adrian Smith

3 August 2005 I am a New Zealand visitor whose grandparents were married in your church on 30 August 1896. They emigrated to South Africa in 1897 and subsequently to New Zealand. I am staying in Wimbledon but expect to be travelling through the area on Saturday next (6th August) and hope to at least see the church if time permits. As a retired IT professional I would like to congratulate you on your well constructed web site.
John E. Ruffle (Rev),

4 June 2005 It was a blessing to find my Uncle Fred's memory as parish priest remembered in your on-line parish history. Blessings to you all in and through our Lord Jesus, Amen!
Susan Fuller 23 May 2005 I went to St Stephen's in late 1940s and St Matthews in 1940s - 50s. I attended the church when Reverend Ruffle was there and my Mother's funeral was held there in early 1967 - her name was "Betty" Fuller. I am amazed to se so many comments on Yiewsley and am sure I recognise Eddie Heselwood from Australia as his Mum was a friend of my Mum's. I lived in High Street Yiewsley and remember it as a rural road with gardens. So nice to be in touch with this bit of history. I have used my maiden name for any recognition by others.
Richard Tattersall,
24 April 2005 I followed the link to St Matthew's School. As a former pupil, 1967 - 1974, it brought back many memories. The sound of children at play is a lovely touch.
Ray Higson,
11 April 2005 I went to St Stephen's Infants school and St Matthew's Primary school in the '50s '60s using the church on a weekly basis throughout my early school days. I moved to Australia in 1972 when I was 18 years old.

10 March 2005 Found this site facinating. I lived at West Drayton in a Children's Home run by Patricia Sirman & Nancy Bellingham. I attended St Matthew's for a while about 1956 & attended choir practice there, I was paid 1 penny. Later we attended St Martin's Church where I was an altar boy. I also attended St Martin's School when it was built & was one of the first students. I'd like some info re: St Martin's Church & school. My wife & live in Australia & I plan to visit this area this coming May/June 2005. This site brings back fond memories as I haven't been there for 45 yrs. PS: I welcome any contacts.

2 March 2005 Found your parish on a "google search". You must be a very vibrant and busy parish... good luck to all of you as we both worship and serve the Lord everywhere... thanks be to God!
Shani Cassady,
23 February 2005 I feel as if I know the church although I have never been to Yiewsley. For a while I researched the Rainer Archive which has in it all the information regarding Padcroft Boys' Home that was sited in Yiewsley. I remember very well reading about Rev. Ruffle et al. Some of my work is lodged at your local library but please get in touch with me if you wish to know more about Padcroft.

25 January 2005 Just to let all our friends at St Matthew's know that our main home is now in Derby, though John is still Dean of Medicine at Liverpool University. I am to be licensed as assistant priest at St Matthew's Darley Abbey, the village where we now live in Derby. Our best wishes to all at St Matthew's Yiewsley.
Ray Higson,

16 January 2005 I have lived in Australia since 1972. I went to St Stephen's and St Matthew's Primary schools in the mid 60's. The last time I was in the UK was 1976 for my sister's wedding at St Matthew's Church. It is a great site to see all this way around the world. St Matthew's will always be my home.
Helen Emsley,

11 January 2005 I visited your site last year, whilst researching the Advent Antiphons. The information was very helpful - Thanks.
Rose Robins,
11 January 2005 St Matthew's has always been 'our' church. My parents were married there and we were all attenders at some time or other. My Grandmother used to clean the church and my Mum's cousin arranged the flowers. My Grandmother's brother is one of the names on the War Memorial. I didn't know this until this year. Our family names are George, Willis and Keen. We are also related to the Lowes family of Brandville Road. Anyone who can help in my family history is wecome to contact me.

Daniel Wright,
21 December 2004 About 16 Years ago I used to be in the Choir at St Matthew's. Christopher Gower was the Vicar and his wife (Carolyn) was the Choir Mistress. The choir was at that time quite large and well thought of and I was just wondering if any of the people involved at that time are still around? I lost touch with everyone when I went to University and then lived abroad for a while. I'm afraid I'm not attached to a church anymore as I am leaning towards being a Humanist, but I would be very interested in finding anyone who was invloved in the choir at that time. Thank you very much for any help that you can give me.
James Neill,
8 December 2004 I found the site very interesting. As an attendee at St Stephen's and St Matthew's in the 1950s and early 1960s it brought back many memories. My parents and sister were married at the church by Revd Ruffle.

I will visit the site regularly. Unfortunately, I am too far away to visit in person as there are no longer any family in the area.
Robert Little,

St Luke's, Chelmsford
4 December 2004 I enjoyed visiting your website. This was done as a matter of interest following your advertisement in the Church Times for a Director of Music. My twin brother, Michael, and I (both Associates of the Royal College of Organists) have been working in church music in the Chelmsford area for over 40 years. We wish you well in your search for a Director of Music.
Graham Coker,

St Mary, Kennington, Kent
29 August 2004 I very much enjoyed the history of the area and the reasons for building the church. I have quite a number of the 3000 population of 1895 as ancestors, mostly brickfield workers by the name of Coker, Dell, Bishop, Bignell, Martin, descended from the sons and daughters of Daniel Coker 1834-1894. Perhaps he is buried in St Matthews? Should any of your congregation or readers of this page think they may be related I would be pleased if they make contact.
Webmaster replies: Sorry, Daniel Coker won't be buried here: there's no graveyard at St Matthew's. The nearest is West Drayton Cemetary, a couple of miles up the road.
Paula Bradshaw (nee Thomson),
St Mary's, Byfleet, Surrey
27 August 2004 Lovely to visit your excellent website. My brothers Ian, Malcolm and I grew up in Fairfield Rd and were privileged to attend St Matthew's School. Our late parents, Peggy and Jock, were very involved in the PTA. I was baptised, confirmed and married in St Matthews. (Rev Weeks married Nick and I on 29th July 1978.) I had worshipped there for many years and served on the PCC. Nick and I have two sons: Stuart (24) and David (21) and I am still an infant teacher. St Matthew's will always be very special to me. God bless you all and regards to those who remember me.

26 July 2004 Used to attend St Matthew's - I stopped when Father Chris left. He made church understandable

4 July 2004 I visited your site today and I suppose the greatest praise for it is the fact that I stayed much longer than I had planned. God bless your ministry.

3 June 2004 I visited your site because I was baptised at St Matthew's in January 1934. Also attended the school during the 2nd World war. Mr Ruffle was Vicar then.

Wed, 12 Mar 2003 I'm beginning some research on my family and background. I am Canadian born, was baptised there in the Church of England, and am hoping to find reference to my mother and maternal grandparents in the Yiewsley/W. Drayton/Hillingdon area. I believe they spent the war there. Names are:

Beryl Lilian Wheeler - b. Aug. 8, 1924
Lilian Mary Wheeler - b. Nov. 7, 1901
Thomas Wheeler - b. July 22, 1896

Any suggestions as to where I might start. I suppose I was hoping to find some church records of birth, weddings, etc...

Thanks much, Tony Hurtado

Thu, 26 Dec 2002 I attended St. Matthew's school (infants and juniors) during the mid-to-late 70's. I was delighted to see the website and history. Thanks very much for the updates and great job with the website. I now live in Washington, D.C. with my wife. My fondest memories of St. Matthew's are of Mr. Evans teaching us handwriting and our church assemblies. Although, Mr. Rothwell was quite a character! Best wishes, and thanks again, Vid.

Mon, 25 Nov 2002 My wife, Shirley, and I were married by Mr Ruffle on June 15, 1957 at St Matthew's. I was in the US Air Force at the time and Shirley (Pope) lived on Maple Ave in Yiewsley. She went to school there as a child. Our children also went there in 1970. We always enjoy Yiewsley while visiting her sister, Chris, who still lives on Maple Ave.
Gerald Saunders,
Sat, 10 Aug 2002 A wonderful history of the church. One note, however - the initials "AS" over the font refer to my great grandfather Albert, not Arthur, Saunders - a churchwarden during the fundraising for expansion of the church.
