Warning: Beware of Imposters [1]
Criminals may attempt to target vulnerable people by posing as firefighters carrying out safety checks then robbing them during the visit. Make sure this doesn't happen to you:
Never agree to a Fire Safety Check if someone calls at your house (or telephones you) without a prior appointment.
Only arrange appointments via the Fire Service contact information above or by visiting the Fire Station. They will arrange an appointment and you can set a password, any word or term of your choice. When the firefighter comes to your home, you can then confirm their identity by asking for the password.
Always ask for ID: even if someone is wearing a uniform with London Fire Brigade (or similar) written on it, they may be bogus (such items have been stolen from Fire Stations in the past). Genuine firefighters will always have an ID card with their photo on it.
No ID: no admittance. If in doubt, phone 08000 28 44 28 and don't let them in. A genuine firefighter won't mind waiting whilst you confirm his or her ID.
